A Very Snowy Colorado Road (Near Monarch Pass, CO - December 29, 2007)
 |
So the plan was to travel to the lovely ski town of
Telluride, Colorado, located
on the western side of the state for New Year's. First, I had to cross the Continental Divide via
Monarch Pass and there I was (adjacent photos)
slowly traveling up Highway 50 with snowy conditions! Not good, I thought. |
|
This particular area, east of Monarch Pass, has a ski area known as
Monarch Mountain. Alongside the road was Monarch Lodge. |
 |
As I continued up, the road the conditions became more snowy and windy.
For Colorado standards, I did not consider it too bad, but ... |
 |
... then right on the highway, there was a standstill of traffic
(photo above). I'm not sure if there was an accident ahead or perhaps there was a long line
stretching out onto the highway from the ski area, but there I was at a halt. One problem:
My two-wheel drive passenger vehicle had trouble moving after being stationary on this snowy stretch of 4% to 6% grade.
Regretably, I slid my car kind of sideways and returned back down hill. The bottom photo
is the snowy road scene as I turned back. |
 |
Sadly, I did not make it to Telluride for New Year's but maybe it
was meant to be. Here are three photos as I returned back towards Salida.
I did think of this web site during the snowy driving adventure and wisely
snapped pictures of the entire experience! ;) |
